Private Label Hair Care – 10 Reasons Why You Should Create Your Own Brand

Okay, you have heard the buzz about Private Label Hair Care or you wouldn’t be here.

We already know that we have your attention.  So why should you spend the time and money to create your own line of Professional Hair Care Products?

I will give you 10 Reasons:

10.  Brand Loyalty – Your clients cannot get your products anywhere else, which can turn into better client retention – why sell something your clients can get elsewhere?

9.  No Diversion – For a manufacturer producing millions of units for one of the big professional companies, it is way too tempting to make a few extra dollars selling it out the back door.

8.  Diversion is Really a Myth – Diversion is a diversion away from what is really happening in the big professional companies.  From a corporate point of view, the CEO of Brand X Professional Hair Care out of New York answers to the Shareholders of the Company – not to stylists, salon owners or even their distributors.  If he or she refused to sell an extra 10 Million units this year to mass retailers, the axe would fall and he or she would be in your salon hoping you can make them look good for their next job interview.

7.  You Have to Buy the Whole Line Up Front – When you bring in a new line, you are likely asked to buy the whole line of products even though you know some of them will never sell – what a complete waste of time and money and a way to lose customers should they buy one of those inferior products.

6.  Your Choice of Fragrance – When was the last time somebody at L’Oreal called you up to ask what fragrance you want in your color shampoo?  Oh right, it never happened.  These are your products and you have the ability to use fragrances or essential oils (for the natural approach) that you know your clients will like.

5.  Your Choice of Botanical Ingredients – You know what new natural extracts are hot and you can have them in your products – not just for marketing, but for true performance enhancement.

4.  Your Choice of Packaging – Whether you are looking for chic or retro, there are many styles of packaging to suit your tastes in creating your vision.

3.  Test the Waters – You can start with one or just a few products and if something isn’t working, you can change it on the next order.

2.  New Product Idea? – Haven’t seen it, it doesn’t exist – tell your Chemist.  Research and Development is what we Chemists live for.  Challenge us to make you the hottest new thing on the market and make the lion’s share of the profits.

The number one reason to create your own line – No, it’s not Ego, but that IS important – the number one reason is:

1.  Make More Money – Yes, I know, it doesn’t sound like the lofty and noble cause you left school with, but it is what we do every day – we sell every single day and if you are in business, it is the number one thing you should be doing – and your staff – we will get to that in the next blog.

With your own brand of Professional Hair Care Products, you will make up to 50% more profit or better than selling the big brands and you will be selling better, more natural products that actually work.

So what’s the next new Hot Ingredient? Look to the Health Food Store and then the Make-up Counter

One of the biggest questions I get is “what ingredients should I use to not only benefit my clients’ hair, but also help with the marketing?”.

Without giving away the answer, one way to predict what will gain you traction in the market is to look at similar industries that trend in similar ways.  The most obvious are natural food ingredients which eventually feed (no pun intended) into skin care products.

Since skin absorbs some of the ingredients in cosmetics right into the body – like eating food – there should be no great surprise that the good stuff from the health food store eventually makes its way into (at least the marketing of) skin care products.  From there, it’s no quantum leap for those new skin care ingredients to find their way into hair care products.

One of the most celebrated examples of this of course are the Omega Oils found in fish and Hemp Seed Oil – see our last blog on The Power Oils.

Other than oils, the ingredients that are lighting up the shelves in the Health Food Stores are Goji Berry and Acai Berry.  These have already started moving into hair care products.

At SLI Beauty, we can help you with what’s new, what works and how to take advantage of this knowledge to create or improve upon your line of Professional Hair Care Products.

The Power Oils

Taking the time to talk about Hemp Seed Oil is long over due. This multi-beneficial oil not only has health benefits, but has many benefits that can enhance your private label products.

Hemp Seed Oil has a 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, which coincidentally is the balance required in the body. This amazing oil has also been shown to relieve eczema and is also very high in antioxidants.

When creating your private label with SLI Beauty you can create a line infused with Hemp Seed Oil so that you can enjoy the benefits of this wonder oil. It has been shown to make hair smoother and softer, also improving the hair’s elasticity within a matter of weeks.

Another one of the power oils you can infuse into your hair care line with SLI Beauty is Avocado Oil. Traditionally put into the vegetable category, the truth is, it is actually a fruit. It is rich in vitamins A and D, which are both very important to the human body.

This natural oil is high in amino acids and essential fatty acids that can help the most irritated skin and scalp, providing relief from the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis. Avocado Oil is also a natural sun blocker, helping to protect your hair and skin from the sun’s harmful rays, while providing an enormous amount of moisture.

This oil is a must for daily conditioners, deep treatments, and is complimented by Almond Oil and Grape seed Oil.

The next power oil to talk about is Grape seed Oil. It is a lightweight oil that has extensive moisturizing properties and because it is so light compared to other power oils, it can absorb quickly without any added weight. It’s regenerating properties helps to maintain normal cell structure. Grape seed oil also has mild astringent benefits, to help with irritated scalps.

When it comes to the power oils nothing compares to Macadamia Nut Oil. This power oil contain the high amount of Omega 7 , also know as Palmitoleic Acid. Palmitoleic Acid is present in our skin, but decreases with the aging process. This highly hydrating oil also contains emollients, which track and attract moisture from the air. If that wasn’t enough, this oil is also loaded with various proteins and Vitamin E.

Macadamia Nut oil is so high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids that it is able to mimic the hair and skins natural sebum.

All of these power oils can be added to your private label hair care line to increase the benefits of your products.

What are replacing the sulfates?

With all the talk about sulfates and how bad they are, it seems that we have been too distracted to take the time to ask, what is taking the place of the sulfates in my shampoo? It is understandable. It takes a while to read through a shampoo label, trying to find the word sulfate to pop out. It is the where’s Waldo of the haircare industry.

Taking the time to understand what sulfates are and what they do is very important. It is equally important to understand what is replacing the sulfates in these now sulfate free shampoos.  Two words, Decyl Glucoside. This is plant derived non ionic surfactant is made from a reaction between a natural plant oil and a natural plant sugar.

Let’s take a closer look. Decyl Glucoside is a very mild surfactant that is good for all hair types and is mild enough for even the most sensitive skin. It is a compliment to Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Some benefits this ingredient can bring to a formulation are:

- Good foaming power

- Compatible with all surfactants

- Mild, but still has very effective cleaning

- Maintains balance without drying

- Does not contain any impurities

- Environmentally friendly

- Suitable for the most sensitive skin

Decyl Glucoside has a moisture binding property that allows for a smoothing effect. This natural ingredient is definitely becoming a front runner for surfactants.

SLI Beauty has selected to use this ingredient as one of its surfactants to replace the use of sulfates. To learn more or find out about other natural ingredients that SLI Beauty has chosen to use in its products, contact us;

Did you say Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate?

We all have heard the term Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.  An ingredient that is placed in our shampoos to create those fun bubbles that we all thought was keeping our hair clean. A surfactant. A detergent.  Yes, your shampoo is a foaming cocktail of ingredients that half the time you can’t pronounce. The problem is, some of the ingredients in your foaming cocktail sound harsh and all too familiar, but really are quite the opposite.

I want to talk about an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate.  I know it seems identical and really is two words deep. Have a closer look at the third word if you will! It does not say Sulfate, it says Sulfoacetate. Close enough you say! Hardly close at all! These two ingredient couldn’t be any further apart from each other if they tried.

Let’s break these down into layman’s terms! Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is the cheat detergent that is put into your shampoos to make those big bubbles. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate helps to create those big bubbles too! There’s a catch. Once is a harsh cheap chemical and the other, to your surprise is a natural ingredient. Shocking I know!

So, let’s talk more about this natural ingredient. What do we know about it? Well, it is derived from coconut and palm oils, it is completely 100% safe for our skin. This plant derived ingredient effectively helps to remove oil, dirt and bacteria, without drying or irritating even the most sensitive skin. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is also a hydrophilic, this means it is attracted to water which enables it to dissolve more readily in water, thus providing superior rinse ability!

To break this down even further let’s talk a little basic soap science. To make soap, you need vegetable oil or fat to be mixed with a high alkaline ingredient such as lye.  When this happens you create an product that likes oil and water.  Many soaps are anionic which means that they have a negative charge on the big soap molecule that needs to be balanced by a positive charged molecule such as sodium ion.  So to break down the ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate:

Sodium is the what is called the counter ion

Lauryl simply refers to a type of oil from the coconut that is 12 Carbon units long (olive oil is made of oleic acid that is 18 carbons long)

Sulfoacetate refers to the water loving part of the molecule.  Sulfur helps the acetate (vinegar) portion of the molecule create more stable bubbles and softer lather.

I know it’s hard to know the difference between some of the ingredients in the shampoos and conditioners out there when you can’t even pronounce half of them. So now you know the difference between Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate. Two of the most commonly confused ingredients in shampoos.

SLI Beauty stands tall behind Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate. We are a Sulfate Free- Paraben Free-Phthalate Free-Salt Free private label hair care company. Offering up a choice to consumers in the industry.

Paraben-demic

Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben? What are these parabens and why is there such a buzz about them? Studies are showing more and more concern about these clever little preservatives.

First, we need to establish what a paraben is exactly. Now many of them have different characteristics, but let speak generally here. A paraben is a preservative that is put into an array of our everyday products. Speaking with regards to the beauty industry, you can find them in your deodorant, mascara, hair care products, skin care products, lipsticks, eye shadows and list goes on and on. You can’t turn a corner without having to rub them on your body.

Parabens have been established as a low cost method to preserve products in the beauty industry. Many studies suggest that parabens are a leading cause in different cancers. Especially, that in when talking about women and breast cancer. Our skin is the largest organ and anything that you apply to it is going to be absorbed directly into your bloodstream. A growing concern is the fact that parabens are showing to mimic estrogen in women and are being found to effect the endocrine system.

Parabens are tricky. For example, grape seed extract is viewed as a natural preservative, but when studied, was found to contain methylparaben. The only difference is that when parabens are consumed vs applied to the skin can be processed and excreted. When applied onto the skin and absorbed, stay in the body a lot longer. Used to slow down the growth of bacteria in a product and increase the shelf life, parabens were thought to be getting the job done. Let’s have a closer look at what can be done instead. Instead of compromising your endocrine system, compromising your body’s ability to identify it’s estrogen, compromising your overall health.

Rosemary Extract Oil is and excellent antioxidant that can help to extend the shelf life of a hair care product. Honey in an undiluted form acts as an amazing bacteria barrier, also Bee Propolis can be used. This is a blend of beeswax and resins that contain both antibacterial and anti fungal properties. Lemon also acts as preservative to help slow down the growth of bacteria, thus improving the shelf life of a product. D-alpha Tocopherol or better known as Vitamin E is an excellent preservative to help prevent oils in products from going rancid. Natural sources such as Lavender, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus are excellent preservatives because of their antiseptic qualities.

SLI Beauty believes in making products that are 100% paraben free. Using a variety of natural sources to preserve our products, while striving to find more sources so that we can remain on the cutting edge of remaining paraben free.

Although studies still prove to be inconclusive, we know enough about how our bodies absorb different chemicals and the effect those chemicals could have on our bodies. This is why SLI Beauty has chosen to remain paraben free and not cut costs to find a cheaper, less safe of a method to preserve our products. Why take the chance when the chance is there?

Parabens have been used for decades now as the number one preservative. SLI Beauty is proud to offer our clients the paraben free option when creating their private label hair care lines. A safer, cleaner approach to hair care.

Ladies & Gentlemen…Sulfates

Sulfates. A word that has created quite the buzz in the hair care industry. The word has become quite heavy for an ingredient that creates those big bubbles everyone loves to gush about. Somewhere in all those big bubbles is the truth and it’s time to wash them away and speak honestly about why they are there and what they do.

SLS, SLES, ALS, what do these all mean? To put it in layman’s terms, Surfactants. These surfactants are put into your shampoos to create the bubbles that we are all told ” clean our hair”. What they don’t tell you about sulfates is the fact that you  are drying out your hair, fading that $200.00 color service you just had done at the salon and some studies show that sulfates are damaging to the immune system. The list doesn’t stop there. Other studies show that sulfates can be damaging to the hair follicle and thus effecting hair growth. Here’s something to think about, SLS is not only in your luxurious shampoo, but your husband just washed your garage floor with it. The same sulfates found in your shampoo are the same sulfates that are used in car degreasers. Those sulfates dissolve the grease on car engines the same way it dissolves the natural oils in your hair. Now you have something to think about.

SLS knows no mercy, they will take whatever you’ve got, including the natural oils that your hair needs to remain healthy. You might now be asking yourself, ” Well if we know all this about sulfates, then why are they being used in my shampoos?”  The answer is simple. Cheap, cheap , cheap.  So what could be recommended is to start buying your shampoos by the gallon, that way you can wash your hair and your car at the same time.

While this seems like a way to cut some costs and time, there is a better way to deal with this dilemma.  There are sulfate free shampoos. SLI Beauty shampoos are completely sulfate free. We don’t think you should have to wash your hair with the same ingredients the car is washed with.

There are many alternative surfactants. One of the more popular being Cocamidopropyl Betaine, this surfactant is derived from coconut oil. Another popular surfactant is Decyl Glucoside which is harvested from corn, potato and wheat. There is a gentler way to wash.

Now is the time to re-educate. While you are not going to have the same big bubbles that you get with sulfates, you can rest assured that you are safe and looking after the health of your hair, as well as, your overall health.

When using a sulfate free shampoo it is recommended to start with a dime sized amount of shampoo and do a light pre-wash followed by a regular shampoo. This will help with creating a lather, which until the mass population understands that the amount of bubbles isn’t what is making their hair clean it might help them feel at ease.

SLI Beauty has a well rounded selection of shampoos that will meet the needs of all hair types. Now SLI Beauty is taking a step further with our Essential Infusions. Contact SLI Beauty to find out more about our shampoos and how you can customize an entire private label line.
